PHOTOGRAPHY

Light changes everything

Lockdown Family

Digital photography is a strange activity; well in the sense of snap shot devices…contemplate the concept of a ‘selfie’ and the obsessive aim of achieving the ‘perfect and ideal’ image.  People take numerous photos of their food or environments and post these on social media to ‘prove their existence’ and be witnessed by people on some level.

However, what is photography as an art form, and what purpose does it serve?

I have thousands of photographs that act as means of recording moments that I breeze over when looking through my files but then there are certain images that capture light, colour, atmosphere or a situation in a way that I am drawn into and that hold my attention longer. For me they carry an element of surprise and are unplanned and it is those images that make me love the concept and effect of photography!

'When Colours Connect' (2016)

This is what fascinates me-unforseen connections, those that are unplanned and just work. Like the way the background shade cloth (which happens to be holding back a moving sand dune) links to the pinkish colour of the tube of bubbles and the red of the watch links to the bubble blowing devise... 'unforeseen repetition'- a principle of design that just happened!

Universal Footware (2009)

This photograph was taken while I was on a mission trip in Kenya. There always seem to be slops lying around my house as well!
